Industries where cryogenic equipment can be applied

Metallurgy

The use of cryogenic equipment is directly dependent on the use of technical gases, and they are in great demand in metallurgy. According to the Technical Gases journal, metallurgy uses 17% of technical gases and their mixtures.

  • Oxygen blast speeds up furnace processes allowing to save coke and get excellent cast iron, and also turn it into steel.
  • Air enriched with oxygen, as well as pure oxygen are necessary for the production of copper, nickel, and lead.
  • Oxygen is also used by metallurgists to reduce emissions of exhaust gases and pollutants.
  • To protect ferrous and non-ferrous metals during annealing, neutral hardening, cyanidation, hard brazing, sintering, and during the work of blast furnaces loading devices nitrogen is broadly used.
  • Argon is necessary in steel production for cleaning, degassing and homogenization. It is also used to create inert and protective environment during melting, welding and cutting of metals and their alloys, for example, stainless steel.

PSKOVTEHGAZ® develops, manufactures, repairs, maintains and modernizes the related equipment: pump units, evaporators, gasifiers, tanks, ramps, etc., and also provides various services and implements integrated engineering projects.

Chemical industry

The chemical industry uses, practically, all kinds of technical gases. They serve as raw materials and working medium. This industry is the second largest consumer of technical gases and, as a consequence, of cryogenic equipment.

  • Most of the nitrogen produced is used for the industrial production of ammonia, which is processed into nitric acid, explosives and fertilizers.
  • Chemical industry uses a large number of tanks with oxidation-sensitive internal surfaces, to protect those nitrogen is also used.
  • Nitrogen and argon are used when storing chemical raw materials.
  • Oxygen serves as an oxidant in many chemical reactions that underlie the production of chemical products.
  • Pure gases and mixtures are necessary in this industry also for laboratory research, control and management of chemical reactions, environmental monitoring and detection of explosive concentrations.

Chemical industry
Mechanical engineering and automotive industry

These industries are taking the third place in the top of technical gases consumption and cryogenic equipment use.

  • The most demanded here, in the industry in whole, is oxygen. It is widely used in metal processing.
  • Nitrogen and helium are needed for crimping (checking the tightness) of tanks and pipelines.
  • Argon is an inert medium for welding various special steels and alloys.
  • Oxygen is also used in welding and cutting metals in hard-to-reach places.
  • Carbon dioxide used in welding makes it possible to obtain seams that are more resistant to mechanical influences.
  • Like in any traditional metalworking, laser welding also uses oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. In new technologies, helium or an argon-helium mixture is added to them.
  • In the automotive industry, technical gases are also needed for heat treatment, cutting and welding metals, and monitoring emissions to the environment.

Food industry

Food industry consumes one tenth of all technical gases, although this sphere of application is rather new.

  • To create an inert environment for the storage, transshipment and packaging of various food products: milk, meat, vegetables and fruits, juices and many other, nitrogen is used allowing to abandon preservatives and increase shelf life preserving the taste of the products.
  • Carbon dioxide is a raw material to produce carbonated beverages, "dry ice" and baking powder.
  • Hydrogen serves to hydrogenate fats (margarine production).
  • The modern food industry uses a large number of refrigeration plants operating on liquid nitrogen.

Construction

Modern construction is unthinkable without gas welding. Gases used for this purpose are described in the sections "Metallurgy" and "Mechanical Engineering".

  • Welding in a deepwater environment (submarine tunnels, pipelines, buried part of above-ground structures, etc.) - hydrowelding - requires dry stable environment. Inert gases help to eject water from the waterbox, they are usually fed there under high pressure. In addition, technical gases are used for the first welding itself.

Medicine and pharmaceutics

These industries are also active consumers of various technical gases, and cryogenic equipment is needed to supply and maintain the required parameters. As a rule, medicine uses high purity gases and cryogenic equipment with a high degree of reliability, since most of technical gases applications here are related to support the life of patients.

  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide (in the form of respiratory mixtures) are used to excite the depressed function of breathing.
  • Nitrogen serves as a coolant for transporting organs to the site of transplantation.
  • Carbon dioxide in solid form ("dry ice"), as well as carbon dioxide and other gases are used in cryomedicine - cold treatment, including cryosurgery.
  • Therapeutic baths with dissolved CO2, as well as mineralized drinks have a healing effect.
  • Nitrogen is required to package the medicines, purge and purify pharmaceutical equipment.

Space technologies and defense complex

Understanding that all the latest developments and the widest range of technologies for metal working, mechanical engineering, construction, etc. are used here, all of the above applies to these industries as well. In addition:

  • Oxygen serves as an oxidizer for rocket fuel.
  • Helium is used in laser technology.
  • Technical gases are necessary for these industries for the production of superconductors, for conducting acoustic monitoring, and for detecting leaks.
  • Argon is used as an indicator of radiation.
  • Divers breathe oxygen-helium mixtures which help to prevent decompression disease.

Oil and gas complex

The very scale of this industry speaks of its importance as a market for cryogenic equipment.

  • The use of nitrogen in oil and gas production boosted together with coil-tubing development technology. The injection of gaseous nitrogen from a nitrogen plant is the most promising way to reduce the bottomhole pressure which ensures the simplicity and reliability of process control over a wide range.

In addition, nitrogen is used for:

  • wells capital repairs;
  • natural gas storage and transportation tanks cleaning;
  • blowing, crimping and testing systems and pipelines (before installation, repair, routine inspections);
  • cleaning of containers from explosive fumes;
  • for conservation and emergency work on pipelines;
  • as a protection against explosion and fires (including oil and gas), as well as in fighting fires in mine faces, seams and enclosed spaces.

Since the middle of the last century, carbon dioxide gas has been injected into oil-bearing reservoirs, but then the application of this technology to increase oil recovery has stopped due to the lack of appropriate equipment. Abroad, an extensive experience in the use of carbon dioxide plants in the field of oil production has been accumulated. In Russia, the interest was only revived in the second decade of the 21st century - due to the depletion of stocks of easily recovered oil. To date, our country also produces the required equipment.

Energy and Emergency

This section unites two industries due to their active use of technical gases (primarily nitrogen) for fire fighting and prevention of explosions. Automobile nitrogen plants are also promising.

Other branches of economy
  • Carbon dioxide in certain concentrations enhances the growth of agricultural plants, so it is used in greenhouses.
  • Production of nanophotonics, computer devices and other complex devices based on integrated circuits requires the use of ultrapure (so-called, "electronic") gases - nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, krypton, xenon and their mixtures.
  • Helium is a unique refrigerant in experimental physics, which makes it possible to use ultra-low temperatures in the study of superconductivity and other properties of materials and media.
  • The production of varnishes and paints uses nitrogen to prevent the polymerization of products, to blow technological equipment, and to package products.
  • The branch of advertising and entertainment uses neon to create luminous signboards and other promo-constructions, and helium to fill balloons and aerostats of various configurations.
